Daphnia Eggs

Daphnia Eggs

Daphnia eggs are great because you can get them at any time of the year, unlike actual live daphnia.

Each portion contains 10 daphnia eggs.

Need a great source for live food for your aquatic pets?  Try hatching your own daphnia!

Baby daphnia are tiny and are great for small fish and fry.  Once your daphnia grows, they will multiply and turn into colony of healthy live food for your fish and reptiles.

Hatching Process:
1. Get the water ready i.e. old fish tank water, dechlorinated water, or rain water (no rainwater if you area is prone to acid rain) and let it cool down to the temperature you’re going to grow your daphnia at. Daphnia can be grown in a wide range of temperatures.

However, ideal water temperature for hatching daphnia eggs is around 20C. Daphnia do not like warm water so if you’re growing them indoors, don’t use a heater.

2. Take eggs and sprinkle into the prepared water.

3. You don’t have to lightly aerate the prepared water as it’s not mandatory but doing so would not hurt the eggs.

4. Eggs will take at least a few days to a week to hatch depending on water parameters. Hatch rate on eggs are unpredictable but the above instructions have worked for us.

5. Once eggs have hatched, you can add 1 to 2 cups of the dissolved daphnia food to the culture so as long as it’s very slightly cloudy. The daphnia are filter feeders so once the water is clear then you can add more food.

6. No heater is required, and aeration is optional but helps.  Lighting is ideal as it may promote the growth of green water which is a source of food for the daphnia.  The more light the better if you have, otherwise keeping the culture by a window works fine as it’s cool and had some light.

Now you are ready to have your own unlimited source of live food for all your aqualic animals!
